As you all know, we had a huge day yesterday announcing that 28 brands and hundreds of employees across Hearst have successfully organized into what is now one of the largest editorial unions in media!
Our peers across the industry have shown a ton of support and enthusiasm for the Hearst Union, and it’s only day one. The Vox Media, New Yorker, Refinery29, Gimlet Media, GMG, and Future unions all tweeted their support along with fellow journalists from outlets like Mashable, Vice, BuzzFeed, and The New York Times! Even Bernie Sanders congratulated us on this massive achievement and encouraged us to keep going! (Take a look at some of the headlines this news has made over at The Daily Beast, CNN, Women’s Wear Daily, Los Angeles Times, and Variety, just to name a few.)
This wasn’t an easy feat and we are so excited for everything we’ve accomplished. As your organizing committee, we are incredibly proud to be working with you all to advocate for an even better workplace. While we’ve surpassed the majority needed to move forward with organizing, we still have some important work to do in building support every day. We all have the tools to get even more Hearst employees on board, and we encourage you to talk to your colleagues who aren’t involved yet.
To stay in the loop, please follow our union accounts on Twitter and Instagram, as these will continue to be updated and reflect what we are striving to accomplish. If you haven’t voiced your support on social media yet, regramming and retweeting content from the union accounts is an easy way to show you’re standing up for a fair, equitable, more diverse, and transparent workplace! Way to go, all! Let’s keep the momentum going!
